Columbia Women in Film (C-WIF) and the Cinematography Club are pleased to announce a workshop with Director of Photography, Nancy Schreiber,
Saturday, April 25th from 11AM - 2PM.

Join us for a screening of Schreiber’s reel followed by a workshop on shooting in all formats and working with a DP. Students are also encouraged to bring clips form their own films and/or questions about their upcoming projects to discuss with Schreiber. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about working with a DP and get feedback on your projects with a focus on camera and lighting techniques.

Nancy Schreiber was the first woman gaffer in New York’s NABET guild and later joined the Camera Guild as a director of photography, shooting more than 50 productions in the last 15 years alone. Her work includes, Neil LaBute’s Your Friends and Neighbors; Shadow Magic, a period film directed in China by Ann Hui; the feature November, which was shot on DVX and earned the Cinemtography Award at Sundance in 2004; and more recently, Motherhood, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was directed by Columbia University professor, Katherine Dieckmann.

Speaker Series with recent CU alumni Madeleine Olnek

Hi, all

C-WIF is excited to invite you to a talk with recent alum Madeleine
Olnek. Olnek is a writer/director (www.madeleineolnek.com) whose
first short comedy "Hold Up," was an official selection of Sundance
and the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2006. She is also a prolific
playwright whose works have been described by playwright Paula Vogel
as "incredible contemporary masterpieces" in American Theater
Magazine. Olnek is also one of the authors of "A Practical Handbook
for the Actor" (foreword by David Mamet).

Olnek’s thesis film, "Countertransference," for which she was awarded
the Adrienne Shelley Award for Best Female Director at the Columbia
Film Festival, was an official selection of Sundance 2009 and won the
Grand Jury award for Outstanding Dramatic Short at Outfest 2008.

Please join us next Friday, April 10th 1:30 PM in room 512, where
Madeleine will screen her work and discuss techniques for working with
actors, shooting on extremely low budgets, and navigating the festival
circuit.

It will be a great opportunity to learn how an emerging, independent
filmmaker and recent CU alum is forging her own path

Are you wondering what to expect during your research arts years? Or
after graduation?

C-WIF is pleased to invite all members to our first meeting of the
semester ,Friday, February 20th @ 1PM, to discuss plans for spring
semester followed by a Panel Discussion on Research Arts Years &
Beyond Graduation!

We will have a brief general meeting to catch up and discuss plans for
the spring semester before moving into a panel discussion with 3rd,
4th, and 5th year students to discuss life during research arts years
and beyond Columbia.

Issues to be discussed by the panel of 3rd, 4th and 5th year student
include:

-Master Classes, Revisions and Directing Thesis classes… how do
these work?
-How do you work and keep on top of your screenwriting and thesis
productions?
-How to find and get funding for your non-thesis and thesis films
-What kinds of jobs do people get during their research arts years?
How do you find these jobs?
-Submitting films to festivals and what to expect once they’re
accepted
-Life during research arts years and after graduation.

Come with all your questions and mingle with students in other years!

Columbia Women in Film is thrilled to start off our spring semester film series with a screening of the 1970 film WANDA, directed by Barbara Loden and shot and edited by our very own, Professor Nicholas Proferes. WANDA was the directorial debut of actress Barbara Loden (wife of Elia Kazan) and sadly the only film she directed before her she died in 1980.

Winner of the Critics Prize in Venice in 1970, Barbara Loden’s WANDA is often referred to as a "forgotten masterpiece." Though a critical hit, it was only released in one theater in NY and never shown in the rest of the country again. Do not miss this opportunity to see this rare gem and hear first hand about the making of the film from a key crew member, Nicholas Proferes!

Hello all!

C-WIF is excited to invite you to our first Film Film Society screening of the year.As many of you know, last year C-WIF launched its very own Film Society with support of the film division to ensure that the work of women directors is shown at Columbia on a regular basis. Every month a student or professor from the film division will curate a screening of a film directed by a woman and each screening will be followed by a discussion. It’s a great opportunityto watch and discuss films withour peers in a laid-back and fun atmosphere.

Our first film this semester is ‘Take Care of My Cat’, a coming-of-age story from South Korea directed by Jeong Jae-eun. Thescreening is this Friday, November 14 at 3:30pm in room 511. Maggie Greenwald will be leading the discussion afterwards and Korean snacks will be provided!

‘Take Care of My Cat’chronicles the lives of a group of friends — five young women — a year after they graduate from high school, showing the heartbreaking changes and inspiring difficulties they face in both their friendships and the working world.

Though critically acclaimed in its native South Korea, the film’s box office returns were not so great, prompting a ‘Save the Cat’ movement involving film-industry professionals to try to increase viewership before its theatrical run would be cut short. The film went on to many international film festivals as well, where it received awards and special mentions.

Sarah is also the founder of her own production company, Dame Work Inc., a New York-based commercial film production, media and entertainment company specializing in commercials, television shows, internet content, documentary and narrative features. CWIF is pleased to announce the second workshop in our fall series of tech workshops for women:

EDITING TECHNIQUES WITH FINAL CUT PRO will be led by our very own Morgan Faust on Tuesday, October 21st from 1PM - 3PM at the DMC.

The workshop is open to women of ALL levels of editing experience. Bring your footage from recent exercises and learn new techniques for cutting those scenes. Morgan will go over any basics and build on what you already know. Learn shortcuts and tools to make editing those exercises a piece of cake! Come meet women students from all years and feel free to ask ANY questions in a completely supportive and friendly environment.

In this workshop, 2nd year director, Brooke Sebold, will re-introduce the basics of shooting on the SONY EX 1 for first time users, expand upon any training you have already received and have questions about, and go into more depth as to what you can do with the camera.

She will also take you through the basics of recording sound into the camera and the entire workflow of shooting, downloading the footage to your hard-drive and logging it in Final Cut Pro.

Come meet women students from all years and feel free to ask ANY questions in a completely supportive and friendly environment. You will get the in-depth training you need to shoot with total confidence!
